WASHINGTON-(INS) The House Ways and Means Committee today approved a measure providing stiffer jail sentences ranging up to 20 years for narcotics law violators.
The legislation provides mandatory minimum sentences of two years for first offenders, five years for second offenders, and 10 years for third offenders.
Maximum imprisonment would be five years for first offenders, 10 years for second, and 20 years for subsequent violations.
The bill also would prohibit a judge from suspending sentence or granting probation to a second or subsequent offender.
