Work In Korea
George Perril Van Dyke, damage controlman third, USN, son of Alice Van Dyke of London, has returned to the United States aboard the attack transport USS Bexar after five months combat duty in Korean waters.
Formerly a unit of the Atlantic Fleet, the Bexar was stationed in the Mediterranean Sea until August, 1950, when she embarked on a 9000 mile dash via the Suez canal to Inchon, Korea, where she landed a combat battalion of U.S. Marines. She later took part in the amphibious landings at Wonsan and in the evacuation of Chinnamp'o where the men of her beach guard were the last United Nations military personnel to leave the burning city.
In a special ceremony during the homeward voyage, Van Dyke was commended by Captain Clarence E. Coffin, USN, commanding officer of the Bexar for his excellent performance of duty as a member of assault boat salvage party.
In spite of the extreme tides at Inchon and Chinnamp'o and the high winds and freezing temperatures of November and December, Van Dyke's devotion to duty under these difficult and hazardous conditions contributed largely to the success of his ship in carrying out its job of landing large numbers of troops on enemy-held beaches.
