Alaska's Hour of Glory
NEVER BEFORE has the Fourth of July meant so
much to Alaskans as it will on this Independence
Day, 1959.
Tomorrow in 49 States the flags being raised
will display 49 stars, and one of them, the newest and
brightest, is for the State of Alaska.
Drafted largely by Thomas Jefferson, the Decla-
ration of Independence expresses the essence of the
political philosophy of the founders of this nation -
that men are created equal and endowed by their
Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Now we enjoy the privilege of having full rights
with our Sister States, equality with our fellow Amer-
icans, and a flag that proclaims to the world the
nation's acceptance of Alaska.
The 49 Star Flag will wave over the nation for a
full year before the Hawaiian star is added.
There
should be a 49 Star Flag gracing every business house
tomorrow, decorating every home, symbolic of the
pride and joy which is in our hearts.
We should rejoice in flaunting it not only on
July 4, but on
every possible occasion,
as
proud
citizens of the United States.
