THE LATE ELECTIONS.
Illinois— We have received the Alton Telegraph of the 10th inst. Its editor is a philosopher. He says:
"In our last we were enabled to present our readers with but very few returns. Information received since, enables us to say that Mr. Gatewood is defeated. The causes which led to this result, it is of no use now to speculate upon. Suffice to say—we are beaten—and honorably so. Mr. Snyder, the Van Buren candidate, it is nearly certain is elected in the place of Mr. Reynolds. Since we have not succeeded in our wishes, we are glad of the result. Mr. Snyder has always been a consistent Van Buren man, and has by that consistency been elected. He has not coaxed both parties—has made no sly promises to anti Van Buren men, in order to obtain their support, and if we are to be beaten, we always wish to be beaten by open and candid means and men."
In giving a list of members elected to the Legislature from seventeen counties, the Telegraph makes out, by very hard straining of course, 26 whigs and 29 for Van Buren.
