REV. DR. ENNIS EXONERATED
Yesterday The Times published two statements concerning the alleged attack on the French ambassador by the Rev. Howard Wilbur Ennis, also the following editorial comment, which fully explains the situation:
The Times yesterday morning published an extract of a sermon delivered Sunday evening by the Rev. Howard Wilbur Ennis which reflected quite severely on the French ambassador, M. Patenotre. This morning Mr. Ennis emphatically disavows having made the statement, over his own signature, and to be perfectly just and impartial The Times also publishes a letter from Mr. Matthew Tighe, who reported the sermon. Those who heard the discourse are best fitted to judge which of the two letters is correct. They are silent witnesses of both right and wrong, for the two signed statements flatly contradict each other.
As was expected, the silent witnesses have called forth a verdict, and it has been demonstrated that the reporter was wrong. There is nothing more to say on the subject, except that The Times bears no ill-will either to the French ambassador or Rev. Ennis, and published the statement as it came from the reporter, depending entirely on his reliability.
No pressure of any kind has been brought to compel this statement, and it is made solely in the interests of those directly concerned. The Times proposes to treat all subjects fairly and from an unprejudiced standpoint, and whenever a mistake is made it has the courage and honor to manfully make correction. With this The Times asks that both M. Patenotre and Rev. Ennis will accept its explanation.
