Judge Tucker's Address.
Judge Tucker's address which appears to-day is not out of time. The matter commends itself to a generation of reflecting, responsible men. The true statesman, the true Christian, the youthful patriot, the prophet of "the better time that is to be," will find here material for thought and prompting to high resolve. His argument is not antiquated and out-worn, unless the triumphs of statesmanship and the conquests of the Gospel have come to superannuation and decay. The picture drawn for us too clearly shows a still subsisting condition of affairs incompatible with love of country, and love of God and human souls, in a very broad, national and gospel sense. It is not enough for us to say-not our fault--"Thou canst not say I did it!" We can only feel entirely acquitted of responsibility when, dismissing all wounded pride-all "railing for railing," all unbrotherliness of feeling, we have approved and encouraged the wise method suggested to restore harmony and Christian communion. There is almost a tone of sadness in the comments of the orator when he says: The politician will never help us to the new order; the fanatic will not help us; the Church has not taken a step to do the Christ-like work; but persists in teaching the untruth of history; the mighty, all-dominant Press is iron-bound and deaf to justice and truth !! Then he turns to the truth-loving youth of the Republic-the cultured young men and young women-the youth of the schools-the fair-minded men, amenable at the court of conscience-- upon these he calls with a rallying cry : "IT WILL BE DONE ;" and closes with a longing hope, turning to cultured womanhood : "It were specifically glorious if the women of the Republic would call for the new order !" It is sad to reflect that the generous youth of the great West and the great North will probably never read a line of this address through the great press, either secular or religious!
