ONE WEEK MORE.
One more week and this campaign will have ended. The battle of the ballots will have been fought and the result known. What the verdict of the people will be no one can tell; but we can hardly believe that an intelligent people can be induced to bankrupt themselves on account of prating for national honor.
Millions of the citizenship of this country have made promises under the impression that the present silver dollar was a genuine dollar and worth as much money as the gold dollar. In fact, the gold advocates now contend that it is as good as gold, yet they approve the conduct of President Cleveland and Secretary Carlisle who have declared that it is not as good as gold; in fact they assert it is not worth half as much as a gold dollar.
If it is good as gold, can the gold bugs tell why it was not used instead of gold? It is as good as gold, and will remain if Mr. Bryan is elected, but should McKinley be elected no one will say then that the silver dollar is as good as gold. There may be some legislation by which it may be redeemed in gold, but you will bid farewell to the silver dollar.
