MUNICIPAL MATTERS--Prominent amongst the events of the week just past was the action of the city council in making a start toward the construction of a municipal sewer system.
Perhaps no one question of local significance possesses the importance which attaches to the sewer proposition. Upon the construction of sewers for the city depends in a great measure the other permanent improvements that have been for months under consideration: nothing can be done with the pavement of the business streets until the sewer work has been disposed of and upon the paving depend other matters of vital importance.
Moreover, the health of the city calls for the prompt construction of a system of sewers; it is something that cannot be delayed long. The sanction of the state board of health of the plan to discharge sewage into the Missoula river is necessary to the operation of the plans which the city council has adopted. Having decided upon the plans, the city council has proceeded to demonstrate to the state board of health the propriety of the use of the river for the purpose in question, and the indications at this time are that the city's case will win.
Then there will be but the question of weather to determine the date of a start upon the construction work. It is essential that this work be done as soon as possible.
