Some time in May 7 or 800 of them attacked a schooner, Capt. Devonshire, belonging to New-York, and laying at an anchor in the river, and killed and wounded five of the crew, and would soon have made a sacrifice of the rest, as about 200 of them, under the fire of the rest, had taken to the water with an intent to swim on board, and he being unable to make any resistance, if Capt. Moor had not at that critical time came to his assistance, who being acquainted with a great number of the chiefs, went on shore in his boat thro' the thickest of the fire, with fair words and some presents distributed among them, with which they were well pleased, they were persuaded to cease firing, then went off and left the vessels to pursue their business.
