GEN. WHEELER'S PROTEST.

As anticipated by the men who know him, General Wheeler has met the shyster who traduced the citizens of New Orleans and misrepresented him beyond all decent bounds. We say has met the shyster, in a figurative sense, since the consummate liar and slanderer's identity has not been revealed. The slander will be better understood by a perusal of General Wheeler's letter which is clear and candid. He has written as becomes a gentleman and a soldier, but why waste time or breath in alluding to a skunk who has deliberately lied, and who, having lied wantonly, remains unknown, at least in so far as the public is concerned. It would be no difficult task to ferret out this libeler and slanderer to his hole by the stink of his carcass, and compel him to explain and apologize or to stand branded as a falsifier.
