Last Friday, pursuant to the sentence of the Superior Court, then sitting at Fairfield, Archibald Fippeny, Lewis Bennet, John Mallet, and Nathaniel Bunell, were cropt, and branded with the letter C on their Foreheads, for counterfeiting the lawful money bills of this colony, New-York bills, dollars, &c. -- Several others, were try'd, at the same court, on suspicion of being accomplices with them in the same crimes, but the evidence not being sufficient to convict them, they were discharged. -- Seth Porter, and -- Sturgess, not chusing to be try'd forfeited their bonds for appearance, the former one thousand pounds, and the other five hundred. = They were in partnership with a gang lately taken up at New-York, viz. Tibbet Hopkins, Gideon Casey, and his two sons, and Daniel Wilcox alias Chase. -- There were found upon these last, two Plates for No. Carolina money, with some moulds and stamps for Spanish dollars and pistareens, with sundry implements fit for counterfeiting, and recipes for smelting and varnish metals ; which they said they had from one How, belonging to Boston ; they came from Rhode-Island Government, in a Schooner, and were bound to North-Carolina, but stopt at New-York to put off some counterfeit bills of that province.
