Full Text

Monticello is famed for its charming
girls, but unhappily there is a
shortage of marriageable young men
over there, which leads to the following
story told to Miss Jefferson Bell
by one of those aforesaid charming
girls.

There are but three young men
in Monticello," she said, meaning
three marriageable men, "and sixty
girls. But those three are very nice
young men," she added. "Whenever
there is a dance or ball in town,
those boys take their three hats, and so
they start straight in different directions calling out: Everybody that
goes with me, comes on," and the
girls swarm out in bunches of twenty
to each man and so all go to
the ball."
