We have received the second annual report of the trustees and of the superintendent of this institution.
A three story brick building has been erected on the institute premises for the present accommodation of the pupils. The cost of the building, of maintaining the pupils, salaries of officers, &c., for the present year, has been $17,107 72.
There are at present, in the institute, 28 pupils, 24 of whom are males, and 4 females. Classes are instructed in spelling, reading, writing, arithmetic geography, grammar, rhetoric and composition, algebra, geometry, chemistry, history, vocal music, thorough bass and instrumental music. In addition to which, lectures are delivered daily on various subjects. The superintendent complains of the scarcity of books, which greatly retards the progress of the pupils.
The pupils are instructed in various industrial occupations, by means of which they may earn a livelihood, after they leave the Institutions. The males are employed in making various kinds of brushes, and willow work, bottoming cane chairs, &c. The females are taught knitting, netting, and bead work.
Pupils residing in the state are educated free of charge for boarding and tuition, but clothing must be furnished by parents or guardians.
The people of Indiana will without doubt cherish and sustain this excellent institution, of which, as well as her other benevolent institutions, she may well be proud.
