RICHMOND, FEBRUARY 28, 1824.

LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS.

At a Meeting of both Branches of the Virginia Legislature, held agreeably to notice in the Hall of the House of Delegates, on Saturday evening, the 21st. Feb. 1824. Linn Banks, Esq. was called to the Chair, and Thomas Ritchie appointed Secretary. On motion, the notice, which convened the Meeting, was read by the Secretary, as follows: "The Member of the Virginia Legislature, who inserted the notice in the last Enquirer, requesting a meeting of his colleagues, for the purpose of forming an Electoral Ticket, in favor of WM. H. CRAWFORD, is particularly anxious to produce the utmost harmony in Virginia, at this interesting crisis. He, therefore, takes the liberty of inviting all the members of the Virginia Legislature, who are willing to harmonise together in the formation of an Electoral Ticket, and to yield their individual preferences, to the ascertained will of the majority. Saturday, Feb. 21. A MEMBER." On motion, the list of the Members of both Houses was called over; and the following Members answered to their names, viz': Members of the Senate—Messrs. On motion Resolved, That the names of the Members be called over, and that each member, as his name is called, should state the name of the candidates whom he might prefer as President and Vice President of the United States. The question was then put, that this Meeting do now proceed to the nomination of a Vice President, and carried without a division. It was then moved and carried, that the meeting dispense with a call of the members, and that the nomination be made viva voce. Mr. Thompson of Fairfax, then nominated for Vice President of the U. S, Albert Gallatin of Pennsylvania: Mr. Braxton nominated Nathaniel Macon of N. Carolina: And Mr. Page nominated Langdon Cheves of Pennsylvania. A motion was then made that the previous decision of the Meeting be reversed, and that the list of the members be called over, each member, as his name was called, declaring the name of the person whom he should prefer as Vice President. The list was then called—and the following members voted for Albert Gallatin, viz:— Messrs. The meeting convened agreeably to adjournment on Saturday night. It was moved and carried, that the names of the members who were absent on Saturday night should be called over—and that such as were present should declare, on hearing their names called, the persons whom they should prefer as President and Vice President of the United States. The list of the absentees being then called over, the following members answered, and declared their preferences: viz. For William H Crawford as President, and Albert Gallatin as Vice President, the following, viz. Messrs. Clopton, Dromgoole, Oglesby, Pollard of King William, Briggs of Madison. Graves, and Thornton. For William H. Crawford as President, and Nathaniel Macon as Vice President, the following, viz. Messrs. McAllister, Harley of Charlotte, and Watkins of Prince Edward, For William H. Crawford as President, and Langdon Cheves as Vice President, the following, viz. Messrs. Miller, and Burton. For John Quincy Adams as President, and Langdon Cheves as Vice President, the following, viz. Mr. Everet. For John Quincy Adams as President, and Andrew Jackson as Vice President, the following viz. Mr. Barton. For John Quincy Adams as President, and Albert Gallatin as Vice President, the following, viz. Mr. Kelly. For Henry Clay as President, and Albert Gallatin as Vice President, the following, viz. Mr. Delashmutt. For Albert Gallatin as Vice President, the following, viz. Mr. Loyall, who had voted by proxy on Saturday Evening for William H. Crawford as President. For Langdon Cheves as Vice President, the following, viz. Mr. Marshall. A motion was made and rejected, that the names of the gentlemen who were in the minority on Saturday Evening should now be called over. Mr. Mallory then requested from his willingness to yield his individual preference to the ascertained will of the majority, that his vote should be put down to William H. Crawford as President, and Albert Gallatin as Vice President. The question was then put and carried that the Meeting do now proceed to the nomination of Electors of President and Vice President of the U. On motion, Resolved, that the Central Corresponding Committee have power to fill all vacancies in the Electoral Ticket, or in the Corresponding Committees, which may arise from death, unwillingness to serve, discrepancy of sentiment on the part of the person nominated, from the sentiment of this meeting -or any other cause.
