A Gentleman of Veracity, arrived in Town last Evening, at 7 o'Clock, from Providence. which Place he left early Yesterday Morning and informs,--

That between 2 & 3 o'Clock On Tuesday Afternoon, the Report of 3 or 4 heavy Cannon were heard there : on which, a Number of Gentlemen repaired to the Hill where the Beacon is fixed. and soon after perceived a very large & heavy Column of Smoke arise, directly over the Town of Newport which increased till Dark,when it was plainly perceived that a great Part,if not the whole of that Town, was in Flames--

That an Express arrived before he set out, from Bristol, with an Account. that the whole Town of Newport was in Flames, when he left the former Place : but by what Means, the Express could not learn ; though doubtless fired on Purpose, by the Enemy stationed there,

That a Gentleman. who left Newport last Monday, brought an Account to Providence. That there was the greatest Disunion between the British and Hessian Troops there, which could not possibly subsist without a general Mutiny.--

That the Asia Man of War, of 60 Guns, commanded by Vandeputt, had sailed from Newport last Monday, for England, on board of which took Passage, Gen. Clinton :

a Frigate sailed in Company with the Asia.
