Aviator Completing Final Check-Up at Tacoma on Machine; Expects to Be Ready About Wednesday.
TACOMA, Wash., July 22, (UP) - Facing a big program, Harold Bromley today began final preparations for his proposed non-stop flight from Tacoma to Tokyo.
"There is little likelihood that we will be ready before Wednesday," he said.
Checks of the motor in his monoplane, City of Tacoma, installations, check of instruments, navigation tests and final conferences with army and navy navigators occupied him today.
Work of installing new gas control valves and a special magnetic compass got under way early today, under direction of P. W. Paxton, motor expert, and Woodson Deed, expert from the Lockheed organization.
"If everything goes as planned, I hope to take off at dawn Wednesday," Bromley said. "This is no definite promise. It will depend on weather conditions, the shape of the motor and other arrangements."
TACOMA, Wash., July 22. (U.P.) - The big orange monoplane, City of Tacoma, received a final inspection by experts from the Lockheed factory today, after which Harold Bromley was expected to announce definitely his plans for taking off on a non-stop flight to Tokyo.
Only minor alterations were to be made in the low winged single-motored craft on which Bromley will rely to take him along the north Pacific coast to the far points of Alaska and thence skirting Siberia to Japan, a distance of 4,712 miles.
