Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Canton (East-Indies) to his friend in this city.
The English embassy (report says) has not been received, and are on their way back with all their presents except three articles, which the Emperor deigned to receive and return three articles in form. It is said here the Emperor having sent his Mandarins to meet Lord Amherst, to instruct him in the forms of his Court, hurried him on so fast that he had to leave his baggage behind, and that immediately upon the Ambassador's entry into Pekin, sent him word he was sitting on his throne expecting him, and that Lord A. wishing to have his presents with him, apologized for not waiting on him by the old excuse of sickness. The next day and the next the Emperor sent the same message, and receiving the same answer, immediately ordered him to withdraw from Pekin, and to return to his own country with all convenient speed. The above is the story told us by the Chinese here, and you may believe as much as you please; and further, if it proves true, it will be the first true report that ever came to European ears through Chinamen, where the Emperor was concerned, that I ever heard of in (now) five voyages, that I have been here. By some of the vessels that have gone home, you will also hear that the English brig that brought out the Ambassador, knocked down the fort at the Bocca Tigris, and passed in spite of them.- This we were told at Macao, and when passing up expected to see the ruined fort. But when we came alongside of it, it stood as usual and not the least appearance of a shot of any kind having touched it. We examined them minutely on both sides, and having the purser of the frigate on board with us, he as well as ourselves were perfectly satisfied the frigate had not even fired at either of them.-- So much for China news. No truth and nothing to be relied on, unless you see it yourself. or have it from a friend.
