MILWAUKEE RUMORS CONFIRMED
BY ROAD'S REPRESENTATIVE
Charles Pfeffer Says Road Is Coming to Puget Sound, and That It Will Come Over Its Own Tracks-The Necessary Terminal Lands Are Secured.
Tacoma, Oct. 11.-The Ledger this morning says:
Charles Pfeffer, townsite agent for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway company, who is working directly under President A. J. Earling, when seen at his home last night, not only confirmed the story printed in the Ledger yesterday regarding the purchase of property on the Tacoma tide lands, but made the first authoritative statement yet given out that the Milwaukee road is coming to Tacoma and that the land purchased is to be used for terminal purposes.
Until yesterday such admission had never been made by an accredited representative of the company, but now that the Milwaukee has secured and has under option what lands will be needed for terminals here, secrecy is no longer maintained, and Mr. Pfeffer talked freely of the plans of the company and the railroad future of Tacoma when interviewed by a Ledger representative.
Not only is the Milwaukee the purchaser of the tide land property, but it is the Milwaukee that has a surveying party at work out of North Yakima, and Mr. Pfeffer himself has attended personally to the securing of much of the right of way for the proposed line from North Yakima west to the mountains, and it was Mr. Pfeffer who authorized the statement last night that the Milwaukee now has surveying parties working east of the mountains.
Will Build Great Docks.
In fact, Mr. Pfeffer, in an authoritative capacity, confirmed many rumors which have been afloat in railroad circles for some weeks and told of the plans of the company to erect great docks on the east side of the Puyallup river, with a view to making Tacoma the principal port of shipment when the road is completed.
Mr. Pfeffer said it had been necessary to maintain as much secrecy as possible in purchasing the terminal lands, as publicity would only subject the company to holdups on the part of the owners of the property, and that the Milwaukee had only followed the well known policy of all railroads in such matters. He added, however, that, in view of the publicity given the transactions made during the past few days, there was no longer any necessity or use of denying the intentions of the Milwaukee to come to the coast.
"You may say for me," said Mr. Pfeffer, "that Tacoma will soon have the benefit of the 7,000 miles of territory covered by the Milwaukee, which will be increased to about 9,000 miles by the time the road reaches the Pacific coast. The road will come into Tacoma over its own tracks and it will have the largest docks in the city when its plans for the improvement of its terminals are completed."
ALL ARE HUSTLING TO REACH PACIFIC COAST
Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 12.-Three new transcontinental routes are to be completed within a couple of years, according to the latest developments in Central Western railway circles. Tuesday the Wisconsin Central lines took in Erie capital and men identified with the Morgan-Hill group, and the Central will be the connecting link between the Erie on the east and the Great Northern on the west.
To meet this condition of affairs, long foreseen, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul has made arrangements for a line to the West, terminating at Tacoma, with lines to Seattle and Portland. The company officials deny that such a plan is under consideration, and it was denied at the last meeting of the road in Milwaukee that such a step had been considered. Secretary Adams denied that the road had just paid $1,000,000 for tidewater property in Tacoma, including rights of way into that city, but from other sources it is known here that such a deal has already been ratified by the directors.
The line will be extended from Chamberlain, South Dakota, to meet the Tacoma Eastern, and the Milwaukee road will take over entirely new property in Tacoma and build a great new station. In connection with this deal is another plan to meet the Hill-Morgan combination. The Canadian Pacific will connect with the new St. Paul-Pacific line, and will be given the traffic in its territory, which has hitherto gone over the Great Northern and Northern Pacific lines. This will be done by a branch line connecting the two lines along the Pacific coast. The eastern end of the system will be by a junction with the Pennsylvania lines at Chicago.
The third transcontinental line is said to be a plan of the Northwestern, with the Vanderbilt lines in the East, to strike for Portland. The details of this project are extremely hazy, as Northwestern officials refuse to talk of the question at all.
