The death of Joseph Caun is thus related; that M. Marchaud, with some French troops, having undertaken to support his pretensions against the reigning Nabob, was in possession of Madura; but finding the Nabob, by means of English auxiliaries, likely to prevail, he dispatched a French officer with a flag of truce from the fort to the English camp, demanding a safe-guard for his own troops, pay for the black troops, and pardon for those who had deserted; and offering at the same time to deliver up Joseph Caun the moment these terms were granted, having already arrested him for that purpose; the terms were accepted, the town was given up, and Joseph Caun delivered over to the Nabob, who ordered him to be hanged next day in the front of the lines.
