Negro Named Supreme Court Justice In Panama Republic

PANAMA CITY, R. P., Nov. 10. --A Negro-Panamanian, making his mark in the judiciary of his country, was elevated last week to a justice of the Supreme court.

The National Assembly by a 44-4 vote confirmed the appointment of Jose Maria Vasquez Diaz by Col. Jose Antonio Remon, president of the Republic earlier.

public. He was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Chief Justice Erasmo de la Guardia who is expected to be appointed legal adviser to the president.

During the debate for confirmation, Alejandro Remon, actual president of the Assembly and brother of the Republic Remon criticized those deputies who attempted to block the confirmation by saying "The attacks are the product of envy, because Vasquez Diaz is not a blond, nor has he blue eyes."

Another deputy, Rogelia Alba attesting to the honesty of the subject declared: "Vasquez Diaz could have exploited his position (prosecuting attorney and filled his pockets."
