MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATURE.

Monday, May 2, 1853.

SENATE.—The orders of the day were taken up, the first matter being the motion of Mr. Parker to indefinitely postpone the bill concerning banks. Mr Cook of Berkshire opposed this motion in a very comprehensive speech, at the close of which he moved the recommittal of the bill, which motion was lost without a division. The motion to indefinitely postpone was sustained by Mr. Lord and others, and carried—yeas 27; nays 3; absent 10.

The bill authorizing a highway across the Merrimac river, between Haverhill and Bradford, was ordered to be engrossed by a vote of 10 to 8.

The bill to incorporate the town of Farnam was amended by substituting the name of "Vernon," and the further consideration of the subject was then referred to the next Legislature.

HOUSE. Mr Fletcher of Lowell, moved a reconsideration of the vote whereby the House adopted the amendment of Mr. Wiggins of Boston, to the bill in addition to the Liquor Law, imposing a penalty of $100 on any real estate owner, who tolerates liquor selling on his premises. After an extended and spirited debate, the question was taken on reconsideration, by yeas and nays, when the vote stood—yeas 107, nays 126; majority against reconsideration 19. Adjourned.
