Full Text

The Union of the Whigs.- We are glad to see that very generally those Whigs who, from local or personal considerations, were not in favor of Gen. Manly's nomination, have avowed their determination to forego their own adverse preferences, and heartily to support the nominee of the party. This is the handsome course of the Comet's Nest, the Asheville News, and some other Whig papers. The only exception is the Rutherford Banner, which has chosen to take up its position in the camp of the enemy, avowing its determination to support Reid. Well, this is better than being a false friend in our own camp; and it is perhaps well that the Banner no longer professes adherence to the Whig party whilst doing what it can to destroy that party. The time will come when that paper, and all others who allow personal or local causes to influence their course in this instance, will be ashamed and grieved to think, that they for a moment sunk all considerations of patriotism, all reverence and respect for the principles of the Whig party, all desire for the predominance of those principles, all horror of Loco focoism, to gratify some rude, miserable, petty, personal feeling.

In a similar spirit of patriotism to that manifested by the papers above named, is the withdrawal of Whig candidates for the Legislature in counties where success would be jeoparded by multiplicity of candidates. Such instances have just come under our notice in Randolph county, where R. H. Brown, Esq. has withdrawn; --in Rowan, where Hamilton G. Jones, Esq. and Mr. Lentz have withdrawn.-
