July 19. On Thursday evening arrived the brigantine St. John, Capt. Neto, in 8 weeks from Oporto, by which we have the following account. That on the passage Capt. Neto spoke a copper-bottomed brigantine man of war, commanded by Captain Coote, whose officer, on boarding the St. John in lat. 24. long 48 gave information that Captain Coote had left Bengal 3 months before; that an action had happened between the British fleet under Sir Richard Bickerton, (who went to succeed Sir Edward Hughes in the chief command in the Indian Seas) and that of France, under Comte de Suffrein. A British line of battle ship was sunk in the action, and one frigate taken: he mentioned nothing of the enemy's loss. The officer was not distinct in his relation of this event: for we are not apprised whether Sir Richard's fleet was attacked separate from Sir Edward's, or these two Admirals were joined--in which latter case the force of the two nations would have been equal-- Provisions were extremely scarce in India,--No accounts of the cessation of hostilities had yet been received there.
