The Garrett County Red Cross Chapter this week announced that it is accepting special contributions for relief of victims of recent earthquakes as part of a national Red Cross program.
The announcement followed a request by the Chilean Ambassador to the United States, Walter Muller, that the Red Cross serve as a channel for relief.
Red Cross President Alfred M. Gruenther said persons wishing to donate funds for Chilean earthquake relief may give money to the Garrett County Chapter. Local persons wishing to donate may mail contributions to the chapter at Oakland, which in turn will forward them to the area office marked "For Chilean Relief."
High seismic waves generated by the Chilean earthquake caused heavy damage in Hawaii and also smashed against coastal areas of California, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
The appeal is in the form of an emergency request, Red Cross officials stressed, and is being conducted on a nation-wide basis.
