BOSTON, March 15.

Extract of a Letter from Jamaica, Dec. 19 1761.

By the Sloop arrived on Saturday last from the Spanish Main, we have an Account, that on the 9th ult. a very great Storm rose upon that Coast, which considerably damag'd the Town of Carthagena, threw together the two Necks of Land that formed the Harbour, and thereby choaked the Navigation thereof, almost destroyed Bocha Chica Castle, drove two men of war ashore, occasioned the loss of many Lives.

The Sea overflowed great part of the Town, and rose to such a height as necessitated the Inhabitants to repair to the upper apartments or roofs.

We hear from Newport, Rhode Island, that last Week the Negro Fellow which lately set Fire to the Stores on the Long Wharf there, was tried and sentenced to be hang'd; as was also a Man for Stealing. Two others 'tis tho't will receive the same Sentence for the Murder of an Indian on the Road from Albany some Time ago:

At the Superiour Court held here last Week, the noted SETH HUDSON, having been convicted on four several Indictments of counterfeiting the Province Treasurer's Notes, was sentenced to be set in the Pillory one Hour, to be whip'd 20 Stripes, to suffer one Year's Imprisonment, and to pay L. 100 as a Fine to the King, upon each conviction: The corporal Punishment to be inflicted four Times also. His Confederate Joshua How, who was convicted of the like Crime on two Indictments, was sentenced to be set in the Pillory one Hour, to suffer one Year's Imprisonment, to be whip'd 39 Stripes, and to pay L. 100 Fine on each Conviction.

John Welch, Charles Lane, and John Barry, tho were convicted of forging Notes on some Shops in this Town, were sentenced as follows, viz. the said Welch to be whip'd 20 Stripes, to be imprisoned six Months, and to pay L. 10 Fine, Lane to be imprisoned 12 Months, and to pay L. 10 Fine, he being convicted on two Indictments, Barry to be imprisoned 3 Months and to pay a Fine of 40s.

One John Dow who was convicted of breaking into a House at Roxbury, and Stealing from thence, was sentenced to be whip'd 20 stripes, to be imprisoned six Months, and to pay triple Damages: &c.

Also one John Tirrel who was convicted of breaking into a Shop in this Town and stealing from thence, was sentenced to be imprisoned six Months, to pay a Fine of L. 10 and to pay triple damages, &c.

Friday last just after Hudson and How received their Sentence, appeared in Public, a humorous Copper Plate Print, representing the Punishment of two Criminals. A Circle in the Center of the Print, contains (as is therein expressed) "The true Profile of the notorious Doctor Seth Hudson." He is pictured in a Bag Wig and genteel Coat, with a Sword under his left Arm, partly drawn; which presents the Words Dutch Tuck on the Blade.

On the left of the Profile a Pillory is represented, with the audacious Doctor fixed therein, facing the Front of the Profile. The Floor he stands on appears to Support the Remains of some Filth, which was applied to his Body by the active Rabble. Just above his Head the Devil is drawn, with a flaming Rod in his right Paw, who cries out, "This is the Man for me!" A Person under the Stage (addressing Hudson) Says, "Doctor, how does the Physick work?" Hudson replies, "Faith it's bro't me to a Stool." On the right of the Profile is display'd a Whipping Post, with the Apparatus thereto belonging, near which Hudson's Fellow Labourer Mr. How, is described as tripping, and turning his head sideways to his dear Brother the Whipper, and Saying, "Here's Back for your Whip, Shilaly!" (Shilaly is a Nick Name given to the Whipper) to which the exquisitely droll Shadow of Shilaly replies "By my Shoul here's Whip!" Under the Picture are four Paragraphs of satirical witty Verse, applicable to the Subject. (entitled, "Hudson's Speech from the Pillory") which afford a few humbling Considerations to those concealed Criminals, who are conscious of being comparatively guilty of Crimes similar to those for which Hudson and How justly Suffer.
