Yesterday Capt. Skimmer in a Schooner arrived here in eight Weeks from Lisbon, by whom we have the following Extract of a Letter from that Place, dated Jan. 20. -- "You have seen no doubt long ago by our English Prints that an Attempt was made the 3d of September last on his Portugueze Majesty's Life, which was very wily hush'd up here for some Months, and by the Minister imputed to a Fall, 'till he discovered the horrid Plot that was form'd by some of the principal Nobility and Jesuits against his Majesty's Life, without any other View but to subvert the Government ;--- However Providence for the good of this poor Country luckily interfer'd ; and his Majesty is intirely recovered. --The 31st ult. Several of the principal Nobility were taken into Custody, and their Crimes being plainly prov'd, as also from their own Confessions. The following Persons suffer'd a Punishment equal to their horrid Crime the 13th Inst. The Marchiones de Favora, beheaded—Next followed her Son. Joze Maria de Favora, who was strangled, and broke on the Wheel.-- The Conde de Attaguia who was her Son in Law, the same—The young Marquis de Favora the same ; then followed two menial Servants of the Duke. and an Ensign of Horse. who suffer'd in the same Manner-- Next the old Marquis. who. was broke on the Wheel alive. but received the Coup de Grace on the Breast-- After him came the Duke de Aveiro. who was also broke alive on the Wheel, but had both his Arms broke before he received the Blow on his Breast :--The last of all, and the most shocking. was a Servant of the Duke's (whose Fire took Place against his Majesty) being burned alive : there was also the Statue of another burned. who made his Escape : After which the whole Scaffold. with the Bodies were burnt, and the Ashes thrown into the Sea.-=It's reported that more Executions will soon follow. particularly some of the Jesuits, who were the principal Fomentors in the Plot : Every Thing has been conducted with great Tranquility, and the Secretary of State has shewed great Abilities in averting the dreadful Consequences, which would have attended this horrid Plot, had it been effected."
