Here is a news item of interest to Dog Mushers and followers of Dog Racing. A race was held on Feb. 6, and it drew quite a few racers from the outlying villages, mostly from Norton Bay and Sound region. There were 14 teams running the 30-mile course from White Mountain to Golovin, round-trip, non-stop. Nineteen teams came from the other villages, ten of them participating in the Race. The total of dogs of the visitors were 177.
The running time of last year, 3 hours, 8 minutes. 27 seconds. was broken by ten race teams.
Here are the results:
First -- Willie Takak. Shaktoolik, time. 2:33.02: second- Charles Auliye, Elim, 2:43.02; third - Aaron Simon, White Mt., 2:43.37; fourth -- Kenneth Dewey, Koyuk, 2:43.55; Consolation -- Thomas R. Brown, White Mt., 3:46.31.
Other teams in the race: Clarence Saccheus, Elim: John Rock. Koyuk; Nathan Nagaruk, Elim; Edison Okitkon, Solomon; Steven Agloinga, White Mt.; Alfred Adams, Koyuk; Herbert James Jr., White Mt.; Ralph Willoya, Golovin; Lincoln Moore, Elim.
Next year is planned to be a bigger and better race. and there will be more Dog Mushers from other participating villages.
