Earle Findley spent the week-end in Atlanta.
Friends of Mrs. Casey Porter regret to know that she is sick.
Mr. Gallie Friend has returned after a business trip to Virginia.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Findley were visitors in Anderson last Thursday.
Miss Margaret Roper of Greenville visited Miss Amy Craig last week.
Judge Mauldin, of Pickens, is presiding over court in Greenville this week.
Miss Mary Jane Cox of Marietta recently visited Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Waldrop.
Miss Maude Ashmore of Atlanta spent the week-end with Mrs. C. E. Robinson.
Mesdames Guy McFall and J. C. Alexander were Greenville shoppers last Friday.
Miss Emily Thornley and Mrs. McD. Bruce visited relatives in Easley last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wilkes spent the week-end with Mrs. J. S. Wilkes at Blairs.
Miss Alma Couse of St. Petersburg, Florida, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Henry Fisher.
Mr. M. Harowitz of Hendersonville, spent last Thursday with his sister, Mrs. A. Katz.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Bigby, of Greenville, spent Sunday with their mother, Mrs. M. J. Welborn.
The Keowee Pharmacy has put a new front to its store building. making it one of the prettiest in town.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Gillespie spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Byars and family near Easley.
Mrs. C. M. Gravely and daughters, Misses Louise, Annie, Beulah and Mary, spent Saturday shopping in Greenville.
Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Hester and Mrs. J. H. Whetmur of Hendersonville were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Hester.
Mesdames T. J. Mauldin and Guy McFall attended the memorial exercises held at Old Stone church last Saturday afternoon.
Next meeting of the Pickens County Singing Convention will be held with Cross Roads church the fourth Saturday and Sunday in September.
Misses Moneta Martin and Mary Hamilton attended the commencement exercises of the West Greenville Academy, Friday evening, May 6th.
The members of the Sunday school class of Mrs. Arthur Gravely gave an appropriate Mother's Day program at the First Baptist church last Sunday.
C. Bruce Hagood, president of the Pickens Mill, was last week elected to the board of directors of the F. W. Poe Manufacturing Co., of Greenville.
Seneca merchants evidently appreciate the trade they are getting from Pickens county. They are using the advertising columns of The Sentinel this week to announce special bargains.
Sydney Bruce, of Easley, was elected treasurer of the Camperdown cotton mill in Greenville at a meeting of the board of directors Monday. He expects to soon move from Easley to Greenville.
Mrs. Ella Keith expects to move to her home this week after making her home for some time with Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Valley. Mrs. Margaret Lewis will live with Mrs. Keith, her daughter, for the present.
May 10th, the Confederate Memorial day was observed in the school auditorium last Monday afternoon. Mrs. T. J. Mauldin presided.
Songs by pupils of Miss Olive Boggs Newton were had. W. C. Mann, Esq. made a splendid address. Immediately after this the different cemeteries were decorated with flowers and wreaths.
W. C. Mann, Esq., was a business visitor to Toccoa, Ga., last Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Porter and Miss Beulah Porter were Greenville shoppers Monday.
The Pickens colored school closed last Friday and appropriate exercises were given for several nights.
Mr. George Ellis of Greenville, spent Monday afternoon with his sister, Mrs. J. M. Gillespie and Mr. Gillespie.
George E. Welborn, superintendent of education of Pickens county, was in Columbia this week on official business.
Mrs. Oliver Bolt gave the pupils of the fourth grade a picnic at Glassy Mountain last Wednesday afternoon.
Misses Olive and Rosa Kelley, of Greenville, are spending their vacation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Gravely.
Miss Mary Margaret Wickersham and Miss Cleone Jewell of Anderson College recently visited the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Jewell.
Mrs. C. E. Singleton and baby daughter, Frances Wanda, of Greenville, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Billing ton.
Mrs. T. A. Kelly has been very sick for the past week, and her sons, Lewis, Clarence and Henry have been visiting her for a few days.
The ladies will be especially interested in Lenhardt Wyatt's ad in today's paper. This popular store is enjoying a tremendous business this season.
Mary Valley, attractive little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Garrett, has returned home after a very pleasant visit with her aunt. Mrs. James Hamilton, of Easley.
Mr. Dick Valley of Sparta, Tenn., visited his brother, Dr. John Valley last week, while transacting business for the Appalachian Lumber Corporation. He will move his family here soon.
Mrs. Vada Louise Folger, third wife of A. R. N. Folger, died in Gaffney Monday morning after a short illness. Mr. Folger, who has been dead sometime, formerly lived in Pickens county.
Mrs. T. L. Bivens and daughters Misses Margaret and Frances, and Mrs. Allen Bivens and baby, left last Wednesday for Lake Junaluska, where they will spend the summer at their home there.
Toomer Thompson has erected a new building for the Pickens Dry Cleaning Co. and is moving the business today. The new location is between the Thompson residence and the new house just built by Mrs. R. L. Davis.
Mrs. George C. Grogan of Elberton, Ga.; Mrs. J. Y. Arnold of Kelsey City, Florida, Mrs. H. D. Jordan of Ridge Springs, S. C., arrived last Thursday and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bruce until Sunday afternoon.
Master Jerrey Boggs had the misfortune to be badly burned last Saturday noon, when hot gravy was spilled by a servant, inflicting painful burns upon his face, neck and chest. He has been a very patient sufferer and is getting along as nicely as possible.
The Pickens Chapter U. D. C. asks the cooperation of the citizens in entertaining the Confederate Veterans in the 25th annual reunion on June 3rd. This is a personal appeal to each house keeper, and if you are willing to assist, please notify Mrs. Arthur C. Gravely, chairman of hospitality committee.
Thirty or more ladies of the Presbyterian church met at this local church Monday afternoon to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the auxiliary organization. An interesting program was given and an offering of twenty-one dollars taken for the benefit of a Japanese school, and students of this school sent unique hand made Japanese boys and girls which were used as favors for this occasion. Sandwiches and tea were served.
Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Nalley; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nalley and Mr. Taft left last Saturday for Atlanta, where Mr. Taft will spend two weeks with his daughter there. The rest of the party left Atlanta Sunday morning for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where the will attend commencement exercises at a Wesleyan College.
On Thursday afternoon of last week the Ladies Aid Society of the Pickens Baptist church met in the home of Mrs. O. S. Stewart, for the purpose of reporting the work done in the last three months. Several ladies of other churches attended this meeting, making the assembly around seventy and helping to make the collection $125.00. This money will be used to help finish paying the debt on the church seats. A nice program consisting of several readings and songs were had, each one having something pertaining to "Smiles", and was thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs. Stewart, assisted by a number of girls and friends served delicious ice cream and angel food cake, during which time pleasant conversation was enjoyed.
The May meeting of the School Improvement Association was held in the school auditorium Tuesday afternoon, May 3rd, with a splendid attendance. Mr. Hoyt Bryant, who will be the superintendent of our school next year, was present, and made some timely and helpful remarks. The members of the public speaking class, under the direction of their teacher, Rev. Justus, gave an entertaining and instructive program, after which the business meeting was held and the following officers for the new year elected:
President, Mrs. G. G. Christopher;
vice president, Mrs. Gary Hiott;
secretary, Mrs. George Welborn;
treasurer, Mrs. A. C. Gravely. It was decided to have the meetings during the summer as usual, on the second Tuesday of each month at four o'clock.
