The loss of an election is never to be remedied by explanation. Nevertheless it is well to understand the causes which have produced a result so unexpected to the mass of the community, as that of the contest in Ohio. It is evident that local considerations have had a stronger influence on the vote of the State than either party anticipated, although it was expected that the Whigs would show a loss compared with the last gubernatorial election. The two legitimate causes of defection in the Whig ranks were the adoption of a banking system, and the course of Gov. Vance in relation to an individual reputedly an offending abolitionist, whose return to Kentucky, whence he had escaped from justice, the Governor favored. To what extent these causes operated, it is impossible to say; but intelligent men acquainted with Ohio politics, before the election predicted that either would defeat the election of Gov. Vance.
The frauds and corruptions of the federal administration are not to be effectually guarded against. It is next to impossible to guard against the tricks of unprincipled demagogues—especially when they are aided by the control of the patronage and money of the nation.
There is no good reason, however, to despair of Ohio; she will be true to the Whig cause when the contest is simply between the Whigs and Tories with no extraneous influences.
The Congressional delegation in the next House will stand 8 Whigs, 10 Tories, and 1 Conservative. The State Senate stands 19 Whigs, 17 Tories; the House 34 Whigs and 38 Tories.
The partial success of the Tories, in some of the recent State elections, has given them the only opportunity to exult, which they have had for two years past, and they appear determined to improve it in good earnest. It is all perfectly proper and natural, and quite becoming; and we can look on their enjoyment with a right good relish, for the sorry faces which they had so long worn, had rendered them really hideous. We can willingly give them an occasional advantage, if they will make no worse use of it than to exult over it.
There is not, however, in all that we have seen, any occurrence which should discourage the Whigs. The Tories have succeeded in Maine, but under circumstances, and by means which will not operate to their permanent advantage. The recent Maine election has given us more confidence in the vote of that State for President, than we had before entertained, from the fact, that the administration has exerted its most strenuous exertions, used the extent of its means of corruption and obviously succeeded by the extent of its frauds. They cannot make the same means work a second time, so effectually. That the Whigs have been defrauded, is the fault of the Administration; if they again suffer themselves to be cheated by the same means, it will be theirs. The Whigs, notwithstanding the adverse result, have shown a larger vote than any other party ever honestly had in that State—larger than they had themselves counted on—and so large that the Tories, before the election, were willing to concede success upon it.
In Vermont, the Whig vote for Governor has been much increased, as well as the strength in the Legislature. They have gained at least one Congressman in Illinois, and the Legislature of the State, where last year the Tory majority was upwards of 5000.
In Pennsylvania they have gained the Legislature, two Congressmen, and nearly one half of the Tory majority on the Governor vote, since the last State election.
In New-Jersey, they could gain nothing, because they had every thing and still retain it.
The exultation of the Tories then, is confined to having saved the Governor of Illinois, to having saved a fraction of their former majority in Pennsylvania, to having elected a powerless Governor in Maryland. They have nominally gained Ohio, but with about as much hope of retaining it, as they have of gaining Massachusetts.
