TWO OUTSTANDING CANDIDATES
It is a source of pride to McAllen people that the two leading contenders for county judge are residents of this city, and The Monitor which knows John Ewing and Charley Swallow so well, is gratified in the knowledge that in the election of either of them the county is assured an outstanding administration dedicated to the best interests of all the people.
In paying deserved respects to one of these men is to compliment the other, for both are intimate friends, and both, by and large, are candidates with the same safe, sane and constructive platforms. It would be a happy day for the taxpayers of this county if the run-off would be between these two citizens of our city, and it would be a happy day for either of them, for, unless we are badly mistaken, those two gentlemen could settle their political races without the trouble and expense to themselves and the voters of a second run-off.
The Monitor believes that John Ewing and Charley Swallow are the best qualified candidates in the race for county judge. We have studied their records, their policies, their plans should they be elected, and we are convinced that they will see to it that special privilege will be routed from the court house in Edinburg, and that every taxpayer will receive the full credit and consideration to which he is entitled.
Both men stand squarely for substantial reduction in taxes. Both are opposed to the present refunding deal which perpetuates an intolerable burden of bonded debt on our backs; both are sincere and frank in their platforms and observations. Both can be depended upon to defend to the last ditch their ideals. Both will have an ear open to advice and reason, but both are the kind of men who do their own thinking and their own acting.
Hidalgo county needs one of these two men for county judge. In fact Hidalgo county needs both of those men on the commissioners court, but unfortunately that is impossible. At any rate we are sure that whichever one is successful the other will give him the full benefit of his advice and counsel; and this does not mean that either one dominates the other, but that each are amenable to advice and reason from the other.
John Ewing's record as mayor of McAllen is the best evidence of his ability, integrity and honesty. Even his critics, and all men in public life have them, will attest to his many good qualities, and in the same breath we can say with equal force, the same things of Charley Swallow. No man is more frank and courageous in his views, and no man has a better grasp and understanding of county problems than he, and with it he is honest and sincere.
At the risk of consistency, we are for them both, for to be for one is to be for the other. The economic security of our county demands that we elect one or the other of these men—John or Charley.
