The Overflow.—We had the pleasure yesterday afternoon of an interview with Mr. Rumbough, the intelligent and capable resident Engineer of the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad, and were happy to learn from him that the effects of the overflow upon the road have been not at all of a serious character. The unsettling of a single mud-sill at the end of a piece of trestle-work, requiring scarcely a half day to repair the injury, has been all the damage done. At no time was the water over the track for a space exceeding two thousand feet, and then to a depth of only a few inches. Hand and truck cars, laden with materials, have been running all the time, and yesterday the locomotive and regular construction train resumed the usual trips—passing out to the head of the road, and returning without any obstruction or mishap. At no time has the work of construction been stopped or retarded by the high water.
The experience of the present overflow is a demonstration of the stability of the work. The water which reached the road did not come from above it, but backed out from the Mississippi through an opening in the Levee some seven or eight miles below this city, which has never been filled up. With that closed—and it will be at a comparatively trifling expense—the line of the road would have been entirely free from water. The track is laid now some twenty-one miles, and the work is progressing steadily and satisfactorily.—Memphis Bulletin.
