Full Text

The Courier & Enquirer says Commodore Perry suggested the Japan expedition. The commodore had not the slightest agency or influence in the origination of the enterprise—no more than Scott had in making war with Mexico. The expedition had its origin with Mr. Fillmore's administration, and Com. Perry simply obeyed the precise and specific instructions of Mr. Fillmore in opening and conducting the negotiations which terminated so favorably for the commerce of the country and the cause of civilization.—[Buffalo Commercial.
