THE NEW CONTRACT
We will soon be in the midst of negotiating for a new contract.
The present contract expires Dec. 31.
All depts. are having special meetings to discuss the weaknesses of the old contract and also new and progressive points for the new one.
The following are some of the probable demands:
1-Six-hour day with eight-hour pay.
2--Closed shop.
3--Yearly minimum wage.
4-Weekly salary basis for shop stewards.
The Economic Royalists in their desperate attempt to fight the CIO. the Democrats and the AFL while at the same time pitting it against the CIO. find that the job of bolstering the dear old Republican party is becoming tougher.
All their arguments are getting tangled up.
DEPT. MEETINGS
All stewards are requested to have a dept. meeting as soon as possible if you have not already had one to discuss the new contract. Everyone should be prepared to criticize and make suggestions. Members should see that their dept. has a meeting and also elect a person to represent their dept. at the conference.
Joe Janovich tried to step out of his safety committeeman job and let someone more efficient take his place.
The boys, however, couldn't see it that way and refused to accept his resignation.
They know a good man when they see one.
Piecework should be abolished by Dec. 31. Will the company live up to the contract? :
This becomes the first big test. Companies have been blaming the unions for all the labor disturbances. Let's watch this one not only for the-sake of an argument, but for our own welfare.
All members that want to help passing cards, driving cars, or challenging in the voting booths Tuesday, please report to Dan Gallagher, 4106 Michigan at Scotten, and you will receive an assignment.
