SODA WATER.

The cheering goblet, brimm'd with rosy wine,
With all its deleterious sweets be Thine;
Mine be the pleasant draught of Soda's stream,
The chrystal fount that mocks the poet's dream!
Tell me, through nature's great wide expanse,
Where fond imagination loves to dance
Tell me, the greatest source of bliss to man--
Where lies his pleasures, where his greatest plan?
Is it in hoarding riches, pile on pile?
Or is it in some damsel's lovely smile?
Is't in the nobler paths of slippery fame?
Or in Religion's more than holy flame?
E'en one of these, or all may be, thy bliss,
But how on earth enjoy his happiness?
Thus--spurn the liquid fire, the poison'd cup,
Thus drink thy every other pleasure up.
Then shall enjoyment bless thy happy days,
Omnipotence be pleased--and man shall praise;
And thou my youthful friend, in time beware,
Nor drink the liquid fire--but liquid air.
