WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24.
COMMUNICATION.
FAST TO-MORROW.
Our worthy and discerning President, placed by his office in the best possible situation to know the real state of his country, has in his proclamation for a day of humiliation, fasting and prayer, to be observed to-morrow, declared it as his opinion, that "the most precious interests of the people of the United States are still held in jeopardy by the hostile designs and insidious arts of a foreign nation, as well as by the dissemination among us of those principles, subversive of all religious, moral and social obligations, that have produced incalculable mischief and misery in other countries." What can have a more direct moral tendency to avert the judgments we are threatened with, than for this great and extensive community to arise, as one, to implore the interposing providence of God for their relief and deliverance? What method so suitable to awaken the attention of the people, to give a check to the growth and progress of licentious principle and practice, and to promote reformation among them, as their generally assembling at their respective places of public worship and instruction, to observe a season of religious solemnities unto God?
