Extract of a Letter from South Carolina, July 10.

"WE are still without any News from the Army, but according to Letters from Fort Prince George, dated the 28th. and from Augusta of the 30th of June, 20 Chickasaws and 2. Catawbas, are returned to the latter Place, and Report that on the Tenth the Army was attacked by some Cherokees, unseen, that the firing continued from Morning till Noon, when the Rangers falling in upon the Rear of the Indians directed by the Smoke, they totally routed the Party in that Ambush, cutting many of them to Pieces, and trampling the rest under their Horses Feet; that they knew not what Number of the Enemy were destroyed, but of the Army 35 were killed, and 24 wounded; Col. Grant upon this burnt seven of their Towns in the Middle Settlements, destroyed all their Provisions, and turned in the Horses to eat up their growing Corn; that they continued with the Army three Days after the Action, during which Time not a Gun had been fired on either side, and that Col. Grant was preparing to go to the Towns in the Valley.

These Chickasaws went from hence last April to join the Army under Col. Grant, on the present Expedition against the Cherokees, and when they returned to Augusta they brought in two Indian scalps, which they pretended they got by surprising a small Town in the Cherokee nation.... At Fort Prince George they had heard nothing from the Army but what these Indians reported; and from their Reports it was supposed there had been some skirmish, at the beginning of which these People ran away. The same Letters assure us, that Col. Grant had upwards of 40 Days Provisions with him. for a greater Number of Men than his Army consisted of: and intimate, that no News from his head quarters was expected in less than ten Days ....

This is all the Account we have, and comes only from those Indians, who are suspected to have Runaway."
