Full Text

The cardinal de Lomenie de Brienne, lately one of the Pope's conclave, has resigned his cardinalship and all the dignities appended to that office, to his holiness the Pope; and adhered to the reformed French clergy. The pope in a long speech before his consistory, has recommended punishing him with severity, if he continues obstinate. His holiness much regrets the loss of Avignon and the whole Comtat de Venaissin, which are now re-annexed to the kingdom of France; he has but two staunch friends left, and these are Naples and Tuscany, whose strict attachment to the holy see is chiefly owing to the engaging and amiable manners and prudent conduct of Pius the sixth.
