WASHINGTON, (A) - The Republican National Committee today accused former President Harry S. Truman of what it called five distortions and falsehoods in three campaign speeches last week.
GOP Chairman Meade Alcorn at the same time challenged the No. 1 Democratic campaigner to explain to northern audiences "why southern Democrats are closing public schools rather than obeying the law."
The Republicans, reacting to Truman's utterances last week in Albany, N. Y., Atlantic City, N. J., and New York City, issued what they called a "Truman vs. the Truth Fact Sheet."
"Harry Truman hit the campaign trail last week and, as usual, left behind him in each city a mountain-sized pile of distortions, half-truths and outright deliberate falsehoods designed to deceive Americans," Alcorn said in a statement. He said the sheet was issued "to correct Mr. Truman's major misstatements."
The GOP document listed the following Truman statements and Republican retorts:
TRUMAN - The Republicans in Washington are following economic policies designed to prevent full production.
REPUBLICANS - Even after the mild spring business downturn, America's gross national production in this peacetime year is about 100 billion dollars more than at the height of the Truman Korean war year of 1952.
TRUMAN -- They want a little unemployment. It helps "keep labor in its place."
REPUBLICANS - More Americans are at work today earning more than at any time under a Democratic administration, and this has been accomplished without the periodic Democratic stimulus of a major war.
TRUMAN -- They want to hold wages down. They think it makes for higher profits.
REPUBLICANS - Personal income is now at a record peak, more than 26 per cent above Truman's best result.
TRUMAN - The idea that Democrats are extravagant and that Republicans are economical is a myth.
REPUBLICANS - In 20 years the Democrats zoomed the national debt by 234 billion dollars; as for spending, the last session of the Democratic 85th Congress set several records.
TRUMAN -- Vital research programs for missiles were held up for years.
REPUBLICANS - Truman is right, but he is the one who held up research programs.
