The Jew
May we consider some outstanding guide-posts dadens no longer send forth rays of unfailing light. No torch was as bright to the Christian Church and to religious history as that lighted by the Jew and his religion of a former period. When the world smothered in paganism, it was the Jew who rescued Jehovah and advanced monotheism. Nine-tenths of the Bible is about the Jew, and its writers are of a similar race. All Christendom swells with pride as it refers to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Isaiah, Moses, etc. The source of our hymns is of Jewish origin: "The Lord is My Shepherd, No Want Shall I Know."
"O God, Our Help in Ages Past." "O, Taste and See." etc., we recognize is but Jewish psaltery. Not only is the physical lineage of our Saviour of a Jewish origin, but the law and prophets were his "three r's." In fact, call the name of our own religious institutions. St. Mark, St. John, St. Luke. They reveal the power of the Jewish guide. Yet to Protestantism and the hungry spiritual world at large, the rays of this lighthouse are dark. Their guideship was lost because they made the 'law' the end, instead of just a means. The 'law' was practical and serviceable, in fact, indispensable at a period in their history. They refused to accept the teachings of Christ, that all revelation is progressive, and that His advent was to fulfill the law. They preferred "the external husk to the inward sustaining ear." For centuries guides of light, guides of truth, guides of the Way, they became lost.
We have dealt at length with this lost guide, because to us, as Negroes, almost equally as commanding lights which pierced the darkest clouds of ignorance, slavery and injustice, are failing today to send forth our gleams. Knights who once meant life, hope and future to the Negro have changed their colors. It is because the beaten paths and familiar landmarks, naturally attract the traveler, we ask you to change your lens and view with us two of these ancient guides.
NORTHERN EDUCATORS IN SOUTHERN SCHOOLS
In the days of reconstruction, northern educators responded to the Macedonian call of the Southland with a true humanitarian sense that the Negro must have educational opportunities. Samuel Armstrong, Ashmun, Miller and Dickey are but a few of those New England lights that held the torch of education and endured dangers, suffered violence, and persevered that the Negro should have his God-given rights. But one of the saddest of southern truths of southern education is that its guides, who have fallen to sleep after well leading the underprivileged race, have been replaced by others who still regard their mission to "bring the Negro out of slavery." This guide today is lost, to the value of the quality-demands of the Negro. No one who is predisposed toward bringing one up from slavery can accord him the identical privileges of a free citizenship.
