New York, April 12—Friends of
General Frederick Dent Grant, U. S.
A., commanding the division of the
east, were greatly grieved today over
the circulation of reports intimating
that there was a mystery in connec-
tion with his sudden death in the Ho-
tel Buckingham early today.
"Such reports are terribly in error,"
said W. A. Purrington, who was at-
torney for both General Grant and his
father, the former president. "The
standing of Dr. Robert Abbe, the dis-
tinguished specialist, who signed the
death certificate, showing that it was
a clot of blood on the heart that
caused final collapse, should be suffi-
ient to set rumors at rest."
The reports circulated were due to
the mystery that has surrounded the
general's illness which was accentu-
ated by his fear that he had inherited
cancer from his distinguished father.
Captain U. S. Grant, son of the dead
soldier, returned today from Washing-
ton, and will make the funeral ar-
rangements after consulting with his
mother, who has been under Dr.
Abbe's care since the general died.
