Full Text

Died.
September 24, at Ph. Werlein's music store, a friend who had long been faithful and true to the house. Spot, old fellow, we miss you now; Your human eyes and glad bow-wow; Your ample tail with its graceful bend That waved a welcome to every friend. Why did you leave us to mourn your loss? Did you find this life such a heavy cross That you laid it down with hopes to find In a better country friends more kind? "Spot, you are mortal," your master would say, When with joyful bound you sprang in his way. But behind that thoughtful and speaking eye Sure there was something that can not die. Is gratitude mortal? Can fidelity die? Who answers yes!—nay, Spot, not I. That instinct that made you so noble alway Is more subtile than matter, diviner than clay. However, we'll hope for the best, old friend; So peace to your bones! and this message we send: Though passed away from this vale of tears, May your tail wag with triumph in happier spheres.
