Full Text

There is at present at Genoa a Corsican Major in the Sardinian Guards who bears so striking a resemblance to the Emperor Napoleon, as to have produced a considerable excitement among the military and others, who have enjoyed the advantage of beholding his late Imperial Majesty. When the ex-Empress Maria Louisa was here, she saw this "Dromio" at the theatre, and she was so struck with the likeness, that she retired from her box, after exhibiting the powerful effect it had upon her feelings. To render the similitude more remarkable, he usually dresses in the costume of Napoleon; and imitates his peculiar gait and demeanour. So great has been the excitement produced, that his Sardinian Majesty's, with that sensitiveness so peculiar to petty despots, has lately ordered him away to take command of a regiment at Savona. The first time I saw him, was at the Cafe de Carlo; I was in company with a French officer who had served under Napoleon in his campaigns, and who beheld him for the last time at the battle of Leipsic. "I perfectly remember the Emperor's appearance during that fatal day, (said my companion after pointing the Corsican officer out to me) and you may believe me, when I solemnly assure you that, were not Napoleon dead, my feelings are now such as to be tempted to exclaim, 'vive l'Empereur.'"
