Deficit Is Cut; Deadline Nears

OLYMPIA—Deficit in the general fund was cut to $1,278,636 the past week as the state neared the April 1 deadline when it will begin paying off registered warrants it has been issuing on the fund since Jan. 2, State Treasurer Phil H. Gallagher reported today.

About $5,000,000 in unpaid general fund warrants are being held by banks and individuals around the state, waiting for the treasurer to call them in. Even though no checks were paid out of the general fund the past week, tax receipts in all 54 state funds were only $1,039,698, compared to $1,914,710 in expenditures. Cash balance in all funds was $15,319,730.
