I would be sorry to be in the slightest degree instrumental in increasing alarm and distrust. But can we safely consider any policy settled, but to keep all policy unsettled and in darkness? We may, it is true, consider the days of the United States Bank as numbered. But we are regularly promised something, no one knows what, to succeed it. it is no longer disguised that the administration intend an attack upon the Tariff, as soon as Congress shall meet, and that an effort will be made to take away all pretext for nullification by reducing the revenue to the actual wants of the government. But whether the duties which are to remain, will be levied with a view to protection and revenue, or to revenue alone, is uncertain. Perhaps all this may not happen, but while efforts are making to accomplish it, all is uncertainty and doubt, our estates, our homes, our wives and children, are in jeopardy. And on whom is the evil of the crisis to fall most heavily? If evil come, will it not come first, come heaviest, on those very classes whose prejudices and jealousies have been aroused, and by whose votes the election has been turned? When the United States Bank winds up its concerns, will not the middling classes, who are money borrowers, be compelled to meet a reduction of prices in their property and sacrifices, which will throw them into the ranks of the poor and destitute; and will not their property go to make the "rich richer and the potent more powerful?" And will not the laborer whose employer is ruined seek in vain for employment? If so, then will many who have contributed to the continuance of the administration, not only know but feel that they have been betrayed into a mistaken view of their own interest.
Election is over, and lamentation is vain.—But we may at last study our condition—we may watch the signs of the times, and by a prudent forecast do what we can to avert the evils, which seem to threaten. We may do our duty and look to God to control events.
