The strict Union between the Courts of Russia and Poland shews it self every Day more and more; and we have certain Advices here, that the Czarina has lately given a signal Proof of her Friendship to Poland, by a Declaration she made to the Emperor's Envoy Extraordinary, the Count d'Ostein, in Effect as follows:
That besides her Alliance with the King of Poland, by virtue whereof she not only has his Interests very much at Heart, but is likewise bound to support and maintain them upon every Occasion, she was in particular concerned very much for the well-grounded Right of his Polish Majesty, as Elector of Saxony, to the Succession of the Dutchies of Juliers and Berg:
That having heard that several Powers were endeavouring for an Accommodation, and a Partition thereof between the King of Prussia, and the Elector. Palatine. in Favour of the Prince of Sultzbach, to the Exclusion of the King of Poland, and the Electoral Family of Saxony; whose Rights to the entire Succession of Juliers. Berg, and Cleves, seem to her at least as clear and evident, as the Pretensions of the two other Competitors, she hoped that the Emperor, instead of giving Ear to an Accommodation so prejudicial to his Dignity of Supreme Judge in the Empire, would be inclined of his own Accord to do Justice in this Case to his Polish Majesty: and that he would be as much biased to it of his own Natural Equity, as from a Grateful Sense of that substantial Service which that Prince lately did to his Imperial Majesty, by so generously furnishing a considerable Body of Saxon Troops, to be employed against the Turks.
That moreover, her Majesty could not help declaring, that she would never abandon the King of Poland's Interests with regard to this Succession; but that, on the contrary, she would support them by the most effectual Methods.
'Tis added, that in Pursuance hereof, her Czarian Majesty has caused very positive Orders to be sent to all her Ministers, where-ever the said Affair is treated of. to second those of the King of Poland, in such Representations as the latter shall make in their Master's Behalf, to the End that nothing may be determined upon that Head, to the Prejudice of the Electoral House of Saxony.
Tis, moreover, the general Notion of Petersburg, that the Powers who are labouring to prevent the Troubles and Confusion that may arise from this Competition, will do the Work but by Halves, if, in the Accommodation of this Affair, the King of Poland. in Quality of Elector and Head of the Saxon Family, does not obtain the Justice and Satisfaction which he has a Right to expect.
