Full Text
The New Chief.—Hugh Kerrin, the newly elected Chief Engineer of the Virginia Fire Department, has for the last two days been engaged in removing the snow and ice from the cisterns and filling them with water. Kerrin starts in well, and, no doubt, will make an efficient officer. Having plenty of water in the cisterns, when a fire occurs, is one of the most essential points, as the fire boys will see that it is put on the fire in good shape, if it is where they can get at it with their machines. Gold Hill and Virginia, when there is plenty of water, will never suffer from fire, as both places have excellent Fire Departments.
