A passenger in the Washington stage informs, that the enemy towed out of Alexandria yesterday the vessels (about 20 sail of different kinds) which they had loaded with all kinds of merchandize found there. The squadron consisting of 2 frigates, a bomb and rocket ship, a sloop of war and a brig, with all the prizes were laying 2 miles below Alexandria—last evening the bomb ship went down and attacked the Fort thrown up on the Maryland side, fired a number of shells and rockets, but six well directed shots from the fort obliged her to haul off and return up to the other shipping. Besides the occasional firing during last night, the passengers heard much heavy firing, beginning at 6 o'clock this morning when they left the city. Com. Rogers commands the Fort on the Maryland, and Porter the one on the Virginia side of the river.
The above intelligence was confirmed by several respectable gentlemen who arrived last evening, that left the city of Washington two hours after the stage; in addition, that the firing was heard when they reached Bladensburgh.
