Full Text

The above advertisement directing a sale of Buck-Hill, and which is alluded to by Col. John Mayo in the foregoing paragraph, was written by me and left at the Argus Office for publication. Why Col. Mayo should suppose that I could be malicious enough to impose a gross falsehood upon the public, I am unable, at this time, to determine--I can assure him that it was not a spirit of revenge or retaliation which prompted the Course which I have taken. In answer to the assertion that "there is no money due upon any of the bonds mentioned in the Deed of Trust alluded to," I will barely remark, that as it respects the Bonds placed in the hands of Mr. E. W. Trent for collection, and for any thing that Mayo has ever produced to us there appear to be a considerable balance still due --and if I am correctly informed, two other bonds secured by the Deed of Trust, are now in the possession of a gentleman of this place, and remain yet to be discharged. The Colonel states that he has in vain solicited an adjustment of this claim--for a more complete answer to this assertion, than any thing which I could say. I must refer to his well known promptness upon such occasions. In the Course which we have pursued, we have been actuated by no other motive than that, dictated by a sense of duty to our client--but I forbear to say more upon this subject,--for had I no more respect for age, than Col. Mayo appears to have for truth and decorum, I would unfold to the world a full history of this transaction, which would place him in a situation not the more enviable for being bereft of all those traits which distinguish the honorable man.
