No Divided Authority in the United States
Spokesmen for Mussolini announce that henceforth Italy will maintain "control," through its consuls, of emigrants in foreign lands.
If a foreign government claims control over its nationals in the United States, then the United States must refuse to let those nationals come here unless they will renounce all such control at the very border.
Any consul or diplomatic agent who tries to exercise control over his countrymen in America should be sent home on the next boat.
Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Any government has a perfect right-so far as the United States is concerned-to forbid its people to get out from under its authority; but no government, save our own, has any authority whatsoever over any part of the United States. The sooner this gentle hint is conveyed to Mussolini the better.
If the state department will not act, then congress should lay down the law.-Labor.
