Captain and 13 Men Drown; Ship Sunk

BELFAST, Ireland, Oct. 27. (via London, 5:10 p. m.)--The British freight steamer Manchester Commerce, bound from Manchester for Montreal, struck a mine at midnight last night and sank. Captain Payne and thirteen men were drowned.

Thirty other members of the crew were saved by a trawler.

MONTREAL, Oct. 27--The Manchester Commerce, a large freighter, plying between Montreal and Manchester, made her last trip from this port October 3. She was owned by the Manchester Liners, a British corporation, had a net tonnage of 3,444, and carried about 48 men. Captain Payne, who went down with his vessel, was widely known in shipping circles here.
